For flat 70’s contribution to Rehearsing Freedoms festival we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight the wisdom and lessons of those who came before us to share their experiences and show us the ways they have BEEN rehearsing and manifesting freedom.
We’ll be running a day long event called Elders Circle designed to foster intergenerational dialogue and collaboration across the many communities local to us in South East London.
This event will offer a space: for listening to and learning from unrenowned yet undeniably remarkable elders in the community – invited to share their stories and perspectives on freedom.
We’ll be leaning on historic practices that combine oral education, performance and communal eating, and it’s an event for those looking to embrace diasporic traditions and raise a chorus of questioning to our collective future.
Specifically we’ll be hearing oral testimony of 1st & 2nd generation immigrants and hold space for those younger than them to ask questions.
South East London is celebrated for its rich cultural fabric, and we invite you to bask in the expertise of the extraordinary immigrants who lived the threads, that wove the fabric, that cloak the city that black built.
Programme includes: thought-provoking discussions on freedom, Poetic exchange curated by Jordan Minga, Opportunities to connect with individuals and organisations committed to promoting freedom + a selection of tantalising tastes to promote anti-imperial digestion – curated by local chef elders.
