Description

This is a conversation with Julian Henriques and Tiny T exploring the intersections of sound system culture and community organising in the context of historical and present-day Lewisham. The discussion will explore how music and community organising builds foundations for generational struggles, narratives and wisdom that can support us to transform our futures and generate new possibilities.

Biography

Professor Julian Henriques is convenor of the MA Cultural Studies programme, Principal Investigator on the ERC Sonic Street Technologies: Culture, Diaspora and Knowledge project, Director of the Topology Research Unit and a co-founder of the Sound System Outernational practice research group in the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London. His credits as a writer and director include the reggae musical feature film Babymother and the short We the Ragamuffin. Julian researches street cultures, music and technologies and is interested in the uses of sound as a critical and creative tool. His sound sculptures include Knots & Donuts at Tate Modern and his books include Changing the Subject, Sonic Bodies and Sonic Media (forthcoming).

In 2005 Tiny founded the vintage Caribbean music collective Skalavin, bringing together vintage selectors to thrill audiences all over Europe. Tiny is a joint member of Vinyl Splashdown promotions, which was started in 2011. Vinyl Splashdown have put on many successful events and have worked with artists such as Sister Audrey and Roger Robin. Tiny T has toured in Japan, Mexico and over 20 European cities. He has played at charity dances for Mutabaruka’s Help Jamaican artists in need and has supported artists such as Winston Francis, Dennis Alcapone and Roy Panton. In 2012 Tiny was crowned Kings of Kings clash winner in Hamburg and in 2019 he was victorious again, winning the Berlin Vintage Reggae Clash. Tiny T continues to fly the flag for Jamaican & Carib  music of yesteryear around the globe.
