Description

“Among all the different arts, the art of music has been especially considered divine, because it is the exact miniature of the law working through the whole universe. If we study ourselves, we shall find that the beats of the pulse and of the heart, the inhaling and exhaling of the breath, are all the work of rhythm. Life depends upon the rhythmic working of the whole mechanism of the body. Breath manifests as voice, as word, as sound.” – Hazarat Inayat Khan, The Mysticism of Sound and Music

This workshop led by Rizmi encourages participants to gather together in sound and expression of our unique, irreproducible instruments – our breath and voice. Participants will rehearse collective expression of the life-force of breath, in harmony with sacred instruments and life-affirming repetitions of words charged with good intentions for ourselves, other beings and the ecologies we move through. This will be a first-time rehearsal, as the facilitator seeks to expand in their newfound practice of seeking to heal their throat chakra and underactive thyroid, and to cultivate through-flow and harmony, particularly between the heart, throat and crown chakras.

Biography

Rizmi is interested in the mystical dimensions of sound, music and collective movement, dissolving perceived boundaries between people and time – into presence. The name “Rizmi” is sampled from and pays homage to the great polymath, Al-Khwarizmi. In the early 800s, Al-Khwarizmi revolutionised scientific thinking through combining Greek and Hindu Sciences – demonstrating the universality of knowledge beyond cultures, borders and language, through techniques we still use today, and to paint visions of the future (the word “algorithm” is based on the latinisation of his name). In transitioning beyond political, economic, colonial and psychological narratives of separation and isolationism, music and art can be our greatest vehicles in affirming interconnection, love and balance, nurturing human nature.
