Skin Deep have curated a day and night of performances, discussions, food, music and games that explore the radical potential of play to heal and resource ourselves, to build strong communities, and to imagine new worlds into being. But mostly, it’s about just coming together to play around, have fun, and celebrate all the people, places and moments that have brought their 10th issue into being. Featuring a soon-to-be-announced line-up of special guest artists and organisations, this will be one for the history books.
Edited by the amazing Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and June Bellebono, alongside the Skin Deep team, the magazine is a collaboration with dozens of Black and POC creatives in the UK and internationally. From games that help to imagine Palestinian futures to finding queer communities; stories of people who are denied play to those of the people working to make sure play is protected; beautiful design and illustration come together to capture the chaos, the construction and the circularity of play as a force for breaking and re-making.
It’s a big deal for Skin Deep to be publishing their 10th issue nearly ten years since they founded the organisation, and a total honour to launch it as part of the Rehearsing Freedoms festival. To be stepping into the next decade of work in alignment with peer organisations for whom we have the deepest respect, co-conspirators in building the just and liberated futures we envision, is definitely something worth celebrating.
So, come and play!

About Skin Deep
Skin Deep makes space for Black creatives and creatives of colour to work towards justice through cultural production. Through our live events, online platform and print magazine, we build capacity for artists and activists in London and globally to think beyond crisis and survival, and dream of just futures.
Predominantly Black and POC-led, Skin Deep occupies a unique space in the media and arts landscape. We produce and curate work that centres hope, joy and lasting meaningful change. We always take the long view, tapping into deep currents that flow from generations past to worlds yet to come – both in the stories we facilitate and tell, and in the long-term relationships we build with contributors, partners and our wider community.
